Some Important Note from Consequences of Environmental Plunder
Environmental degradation: environment means the surroundings and conditions in which a person, animal or plant lives or operates. Here, the term refers to the natural world, the character or quality of which is lowered or destroyed as a result of human activities, growing to a more advanced stage.
Compromised: weakened by accepting standards that are lower than is desirable.
Per - capita : per head.
Undermine : erode the base or foundation of.
Traditional livelihood: means by which people have earned their living customarily from generation to generation.
Antecedent: a thing or event that precedes another.
Chronic: recurring constantly.
Sustainable development: advancement which takes place while conserving environmental balance by avoiding destruction of natural resources.
WHO: World Health Organization, a wing of the United Nations, which looks after health issues at the global level.
Cumulative: increasing in quantity, degree or force through successive additions.
Groundwater table: the level at which sources of water under ground exist at a particular place.
Infringement: actively breaking agreed boundaries.
Distributive justice: justice based on equitable distribution of resources etc.
Disguised violence: although there is no open act of physical attack here, the environmental plunder that the authors talk of leads to the destruction of lives and livelihoods of many people. Hence, it is called disguised, that is, indirect or hidden violence.
Narmada dam: The Narmada is a major river of western India. A project for building a huge system of barrages and dams have been taken with the objective of providing irrigation to dry areas of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. However, the project has run into major controversies, and protest movements are being organized by people like Medha Patkar, who think that the human cost of the dam will be much higher than the benefits it will provide. Many thousands of people will become homeless. Their water resources will be taken away from them and scarcity of water will increase for a large majority of people while only some large farmers will benefit from the dam.
